Journey
Robert Baguma Baijukya, professionally known as Junior Shanks (aka Shanks Vivi D or Shanks Gumaras,) is a trailblazing Ugandan dancehall artist, celebrated for blending local dialects with Jamaican patois over reggae-inspired rhythms. His signature sound set the tone for future stars like Bobi Wine, Bebe Cool, and José Chameleone.
Born in 1973 in Kizibu, Kiryandongo District, Shanks was the youngest of ten children. His father, William Baijukya, worked at Uganda’s Finance Ministry, and his mother, Teopista Namuli, was a homemaker. He attended several schools before joining Namilyango College, where he became a standout dancer, winning “Mr Inter House” during his O-Level years. He left school in 1992 following the death of his father and financial challenges.
His career kicked off in the early 1990s with a dancehall sound rooted in Jamaican influence but grounded in Ugandan identity. The name “Shanks” paid homage to Shabba Ranks, while “Vivi D” stood for “Very Incisive, Very Interesting & Excellent Dancer.” Songs like "Bundu," "Kakokolo," "Nsangi," and "Mukwano Olimba" made him a household name. He was also a popular radio presenter on Capital FM.
In 2000, Shanks moved to the UK to attend music industry workshops at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, where he produced his album "Mujaguzo." However, he struggled with cannabis dependence during this period, eventually entering rehab. By 2003, he had embraced Christianity and rebranded as Shanks Gumaras.
After returning to Uganda in 2008, he released new music, including the 2017 track "Kisambi" and the 2020 gospel project Yeshua 2020. He also founded Amashanka Music, where he mentored artists such as José Chameleone and supported talents like Junior Shanks and Myco Chris. He now runs Urban Lyfe Productions, working with artists in Uganda, the UK, the USA, and Jamaica.
